review: Rickles' Book
Well since I wasn't interested in watching the Broncos barely beat the staggering Steelers I read Rickles' Book instead, it was well worth it.
I'd seen Don Rickles on talk shows and here-and-there in movies, but never recognized him as a comedic great or an A-Lister during the rat pack days. Nor had I ever seen anyone with that kind of comedy style. Even so it only took me a single glance into the first chapter while sitting in the bookstore to realize it was written just like he tells his stories. Each chapter is between one or two pages, and is in Rickles' very own tone.
I liked the stories of him struggling and trying to hit it big. But it was amazing to hear the stories of all the people he has gotten to know and become friends with. From Frank Sinatra, to Ronald Reagan, to Clint Eastwood, to Gene Cernan (commander of Apollo 17). Most of my Sinatra knowledge is from movies that refer to his "pull" in Vegas, and the respect he got from anyone who was anyone.
If you like the guy, the era, or interesting biographies check it out.
Rickles tells a story in the book of when he was struggling on the lady front and his date sees Sinatra from across the Sands in Vegas, so he goes over and asks Frank to come by and just say "hello Don". He waits and waits then finally Sinatra starts heading over
My date was beaming. I was beaming. Frank was beaming.
"Don," he said. "How the hell are you?"
I took a deep breath, counted off a beat, turned to him and, in
my loudest voice, said, "NOT NOW, FRANK-CAN'T YOU SEE I'M WITH SOMEBODY!"
The violins stopped.
The clinking glasses stopped.
Everyone stopped talking.
Everyone stared at us.
Time stopped.
And then, God bless him, Frank fell down laughing...
PEACE
Doug
